Joshua Kelly is a well-known saxophonist in the jazz and improvisation scene in Melbourne, though he frequently collaborates with modern soul and hip-hop collective, 30/70 and has appeared on stage with The Panics (ARIA), Albrecht Labrooy and Finding Isla as well.
Bloom is his way of connecting these influences together. A ‘cinematic’ jazz ensemble that incorporates influences of electronica, folk and hip-hop music. Not quite jazz, not quite rock or electronic music; Bloom fits somewhere in between these genres, borrowing a little from each in the poignant compositions.
Supporting Tim Pledger.

March to Izbica is a new large ensemble work by Melbourne-based alto saxophonist, Josh Kelly. The piece serves as a vehicle to explore rhythmic improvisation in the large ensemble context through a series of pre-composed rhythm cycles that are framed by sections of free improvisation and arranged in real time by the performers. Taking influence from the intricate rhythmic music of Steve Coleman and the ‘Five Elements’, John Coltrane’s Ascension, and the layered polytonal traditional Korean music of Sinawi; this is a highly energetic, complex and expressive piece of music that allows for plenty of improvisational freedom.
The suite is entitled March to Izbica in commemoration of my great grandfather who, under Nazi rule, was separated from his family and deported from his hometown in Germany, to the Nazi Ghetto Izbica in Poland, where he perished during the Holocaust.
Trumpet: Pat Thiele & Reuben Lewis
Alto Saxophone: Joshua Kelly & Cheryl Durongpisitkul
Tenor Saxophone: Scott McConnachie & Shaun Rammers
Bass Clarinet: Tony Hicks
Trombone: James Macaulay
Double Bass: Hiroki Hoshino & Tamara Murphy
Drum Kit: Ronny Ferella & Ziggy Zeitgeist
We are lucky enough to share this residency with Scandinavia's Greatest Hits featuring the wonderful saxophonist Holly Moore with fellow 30/70 family member Jarrod Chase.

Josh Kelly Trio
A trio lead by Melbourne saxophonist, Josh Kelly, which draws influence from two pivotal movements in jazz from the late 50’s: modal jazz and free jazz. Ideas from each movement are used to inform contemporary jazz compositions that are rooted in these traditions, but expand on them through extended harmonic and rhythmic tools influenced by the modern Melbourne and New York jazz scenes. The music is written over set rhythmic and modal frameworks, to allow the trio to embellish and expand on rhythms and counterpoint melodies over many repeats. The rhythm cycles, or grooves are influenced by jazz and traditional folk music, including African and traditional Korean music. The band features:
Josh Kelly – Alto Saxophone
Hiroki Hoshino – Double Bass
Maria Moles – Drum Kit

The Emergent Euphoric Experience of Energy Music (tEEEEm)
tEEEm are an improvised music ensemble comprised of Zeke Ruckman (drum set/electronics), Adam Halliwell (electric guitar) and Josh Kelly (saxophone). The band explores concepts of 60's era free jazz, combining mindful thought with outward expression of emotion in the instrumentation of saxophone, electric guitar and drums. The music draws heavily on free jazz, but embraces the contemporary influence of sample-based and electronic music. The band aims to create music that feeds off energy which builds through the act of creation.

Josh Kelly Trio:
A new trio lead by Melbourne saxophonist, Josh Kelly, which draws influence from two pivotal movements in jazz from the late 50’s: modal jazz and free jazz. The trio expands on major ideas from each of these movements, while incorporating some more unique influences such as the rhythmic interplay of modern Australian jazz and the modal concepts found in traditional Korean music. Josh has used these concepts and influences to compose music specifically for this trio, balancing sections of free improvisation with strong improvisation structures based on modal and rhythmic concepts. The band features:
Josh Kelly – Alto Saxophone
Hiroki Hoshino – Double Bass
Maria Moles – Drum Kit
