The Oscar Neyland Quartet is an engaging, dynamic and creative jazz group from Melbourne. Originally from Tasmania, bassist Oscar Neyland moved to Melbourne to pursue his Honours in Music at Monash university, which he completed First Class in 2013. Formed out of a collective desire to approach music making in the most open and creative way possible – while still nodding toward the great swing tradition – the quartet features the talents of Joshua Kelly on Saxophone, pianist Joel Trigg and drummer Zeke Ruckman. The group counts influences as varied as Bill Evans, The Necks, Coltrane, J Dilla, Debussy, Ellington, Bach and Colin Stetson.
On this occasion, The Oscar Neyland Quartet will play a mixture of original compositions and arrangements (some pre planned, some spontaneous) of some of their favourite songs and jazz standards. Throughout the whole concert the group sustains the same reverence for melody, tradition, space, interaction and emotion. The Quartet aims to be exciting, thought provoking, really swinging, and a lot of fun.
